A pretty back road drive home from Langley this evening - just me and my little car

i heart swimmers.

Attempting to do homework while the mens Olympic swimming is on in the background has NOT been very conducive to an enviroment that gets my paper written! These boys are insane - they have the muscles of a body builder, the looks of a model and the swimming capabilities that I would only dream of having. Seriously, I know what it takes to swim well and it is HARD. Especially butterfly. Yikes. Here are some lovely photos of the boys in action this morning, and a few interesting facts about Ryan Lochte.

They have some crazy breaststroke going on. Not how us regular swimmers do it.

My boy Ryan Lochte...isn't he dreamy??

Look at those muscles involved in doing fly...!! Insane!

come on down!

I went to the Price is Right at the Boulevard Casino a few nights ago and it was so entertaining! I'd definitely recommend it if you are looking for something to do this weekend. I was petrified of being called down and making a fool out of myself, however I didn't get called at all so it was a-ok! Jerry Springer was the host who is super funny; he should definitely look into doing stand up comedy. Did you know he was a lawyer?! Neither did I! Pictures were not allowed so the one photo of inside the theatre is just the announcer prior to the official show starting.

Upcoming Movie: Life of Pi

My aunt found this trailer for me - one of my favorite books is being turned into a movie this year! This book (by Yann Martel) is about a boy who gets trapped on a boat with a zebra, hyena and a tiger; it is about his story of survival. There are, however, many religious aspects thrown into the book and Pi's storytelling is questionned. Definitely an intriguing read!! PS - a factoid: the main character's name is Pi, which is short for Piscine which means pool in French!

I saw this on Facebook & loved it! Enjoy :)

principles of innovation

Marissa Mayer, who is the CEO of Yahoo! and also worked as a VP for Google, shared some tips for innovation in the workplace.  Marissa is also the youngest CEO of a Fortune 500 company at her age of 37.

I was intrigued by this topic because of a class I am in currently where we are learning the importance of creativity & innovation and looked at Ideo as a company who embraces them well. (check them out - they are a super cool company!!)

The idea of innovation applies not only to organizations, but to life in general! When the definition of innovation is "the introduction of something new", why WOULDN'T you want to be innovative?! Making dinner, having conversations, making plans with friends - these all include innovation!

Marissa's 9 principles of innovation are: (with my brief summaries to explain some beside them!)

1. Innovation, not instant perfection: when you launch something, that's when you get your best feedback.
2. Ideas come from everywhere.
3. A license to pursue your dreams: when Marissa worked for Google, engineers have 20%  of their work time that they were allowed to work on whatever they want. This allowed them to come up with great ideas for things they were genuinely passionate about and worked well for the company.
4. Morph projects, don't kill them.
5. Share as much information as you can.
6. Users, users, users: in a business, when you focus on the users & consumers of a product, the money and revenue will naturally come after.
7. Data is apolitical: make decisions on what works best from people actually using it, not who likes what the best internally.
8. Creativity loves constraints: people love to think their way out of the box!
9. "You're brilliant? We're hiring!": a slogan Marissa found worked wonders when creating job postings.

I love my sleep. Who doesn't?! However, I feel like as I get older, sleeping in is becoming less and less of a reality.

In my late teens and early 20's, I used to be able to go to sleep at ANY time and sleep for 10, 12, 13 hours at a time. Now, at my ripe age of 27, I cannot sleep past 9 am on the weekend. This is regardless of what time I go to bed at, I might add. This kills me a little bit inside.

Last night, for example, I got into my bed around 1:30 am and fell asleep around 2:30am. I am a such a night owl lately that when I get into bed, I am wide awake and just want to play around on my phone, check Facebook and tweet. And play Tiny Tower.

I tried Googling some studies on sleep habits of young adults and then had a startling realization: Am I even considered a young adult?!

Anywho, I'm not complaining, just realizing that life changes...

Another funny (my personal fave!)

the car family

Do you have an attachment to your car? Our family tends to get attached to our vehicles. (Well, most of us...)

My brother got a new truck today and it kind of feels like a new family member! It's a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5.7L Hemi. It's pretty darn nice! And HUGE. I think he got it to pick up chicks....

We went for its first slurpee drive tonight; as you can see below in my lovely "artistic" instagramed photos!

My brother and I are both now on our 3rd vehicles. For the record, I still miss my silver VW GTI a lot. Like, a LOT. It was so comfy, fast and sporty. I like my car now (2008 Honda Fit) but its just not as exciting. It's great on gas and practical, but it's not the same as my 1.8 turbo engine car... Sniff sniff.

a funny!

I want these flip flops from Nordstrom! They are Havianas, my favorite flip flop brand, and come adorned with Swarski crystals on the straps. There is only one downfall...they are not cheap...$159.54...maybe if I win the lottery?!

I bought plain ol' black instead ($27) since I wear the heck out of mine and desperately need new ones to wear daily!

beliefs of successful people

Doing some research on wellness programs in the workplace for school, I came across this article on Inc. They always have really interesting, easy to read business articles that I definitely recommend. This one I really enjoyed, entitled "9 Beliefs of Remarkably Successful People." I have outlined them below, but have a read!

1. Time doesn't fill me. I fill time.
2. The people around me are the people I chose.
3. I have never paid my dues.
4. Experience is irrelevant. Accomplishments are everything.
5. Failure is something I accomplish; it doesn't just happen to me.
6. Volunteers always win.
7. As long as I'm paid well, it's all good.
8. People who pay me always have the right to tell me what to do.
9. The extra mile is a vast, unpopulated wasteland.

There you have it folks, 9 easy steps to be successful! I like a lot of them because they are positive and relate to working hard and choosing your choices in life. I especially like #5 - this means not having a "woe is me" attitude and taking responsibility for your actions. I like this article because it is not only workplace relevant.

Happy reading! Do YOU believe in these?!

Oh, and check out this article for 7 habits of extraordinary teams!

a second full time job.

That is how I feel about school right now. The amount of emails I respond to, group projects I am part of, papers I have written, group meetings I attend...ah!!! I'm up to my eyeballs in school and feeling overwhelmed.

That is all.

watermelon mojito

I saw this delicious recipe here and feel like this is a definite summer must try drink. I love mojitos!!

i can't help but post this...

dirty dancing.

Dirty Dancing is my favorite movie of all times!! AND it's on TV today. That is the equation for a great day. I love the music & the characters so much and pretty much everything else about it too.

Best part of the movie: "I carried a watermelon."

Baby's got moves!

How hunky is Johnny?!

I haven't been feeling very connected to this dear blog of mine lately. I want to love it, but for some reason I am just not into it these days! Could be several reasons, but usually when I don't blog for a few days I get antsy. No ants here though. I have some thoughts, in no particular order:
  • My life is not that exciting to fill this blog daily with wildly fun, interesting things.
  • Does anyone really read the articles & other cool things I post? Or are they actually only cool to me?
  • I wish I knew exactly who was reading my blog. I have about 30 page views per day....?!
  • Does anyone have cool things for me to blog about?!
  • At the end of the day, I guess really this blog is whatever I want to blog about?!
Anywho, I am going to go attempt to write a paper... wish me luck...

the bridge.

The bridge to me has always been the Port Mann, since I practically live on it, but the past few weeks I've been taking the Golden Ears Bridge since I'm livin' it up in Coquitlam these days. No lie, every time I go over the bridge, I think about how pretty it is. Not just the bridge, but the mountains, the river and the whole scene that is around that bridge. I am tempted to pull over and take photos sometimes, but that might be easier said than done...therefore, my good friend Google has taken some photos for me:

summer time

Good ol' summertime...rainy so far, yes; fun, ALSO yes! Remember the days when summer meant excessive amounts of free time, friend hang outs galore and just such FUN days? I loved my days of working at Timberline, a summer day camp. I had many fun summers spent working there as a camp counselor, so camp has a soft spot in my heart. Check our our YMCA day camp promotional video below and be reminder of summer fun! (it was the idea of camp staff and they are all the lovely actors & actresses in it! They're so great!)

Just when I thought I was getting better again, I think I have food poisoning. It's much better today, but last night and alllll during the night I was so sick. I think I was up until about 6 am. I will spare you all the details, but it was not fun AT ALL. I haven't eaten yet today with the exception of some saltines and flat gingerale that my parents drove to me all the way at my aunts in Coquitlam. My grandpa even sent me a rose. I have the best family ever :)

I have seriously been in bed all day. I am exhausted. My throat is still bugging me a bit, but definitely better. Kelowna was a short, productive trip for work and the only photo I took was one of a drive thru Subway! Cool hey?! (no, we didn't try it!)

Oh, and Happy Canada Day! I'm a bit grumpy that I can't be off watching fireworks somewhere, in all honesty.
