weekend adventures

I always struggle to come up with fun, catchy, unique blog titles. I want them to be quirky and awesome, but can never come up with any that aren't simply explanatory (as seen above). My apologies in advance for my lack of creativity with them.

I have been taking lots of iPhone pictures these days on my snazzy new phone so I think that photos are my favorite option for blogging right now!

I painted my nails today at Amandas. We had a girly night involving Indian food, nail painting, and TV. You can't tell, but my ring finger nail has tiny little beads on it. It's a cool set that Amanda has from Sephora! I fear they will fall off soon, but I just need them to last until New Years, that's it! A girl likes to feel fancy on New Years once in a while.

Apparently we needed a new TV, so my dad went out and bought a ginourmous one! It's also a 'smart' TV. Apparently you can talk to it...

I did some scarf rearranging since my collection is growing! I have yet to wear my new lulu head warmer but will soon! I love it. (far right, top)

This baby is coming out with me tomorrow night when Edwin and I hit up the Boathouse for dinner. I am excited to use it!! This was a Christmas gift from my fashionista sister.

I made udon noodles for dinner last week. Its really easy and so yummy. I bought udon  noodles never having tried them, and it turns out Edwin and I eat them regularly now! This is just stir fried veggies, udon noodles, shrimp, beef (not pictured since it gets added in after for the meat-eaters), and schezuan sauce. Oh and on top, sesame seeds, cilantro, and green onions. Voila!

I also made chocolate chip banana pancakes this weekend. They made me feel like I was a kid again!

Edwin took me on an adventure to his alma mater, UBC. We went for a walk and saw where he used to live, had coffee (pictured below!) and I fell in love with the below house.

It's only $1.6 million. For a townhouse...

My coffee that is now my background and screen saver on my phone! I love this picture. Doesn't it just scream Saturday afternoon?

Edwin and I went for dinner with Christy Dawn, Jesse, Jason, Steph, and baby Kaelyn on Saturday at Via Tevere Pizzeria. You may remember when I went last time, for Christy Dawn's birthday, and fell in love with it. I raved about it all day to Edwin; he must have been sick of hearing about how excited I was to eat there again! This was his pizza. I think his review on it was pretty good actually, even with all my hype about it!

This was my pizza (front) and Christy Dawn's pizza (back). To. Die. For. It's so different than the regular pizza joint. It's authentic (well, I think it is...), light, and full of flavor. And full of basil. What's not to love? Plus, I like the exclusivity of the place since it gets so busy. It is almost like the Anton's of pizza. You have to wait in line outside. We got there early and were first in line around 4:30 pm for when they opened at 5 pm.

Oh, and this donut? You won't find a better one in town.

Baby Kaelyn and I hung out for a while. She was adorable, as usual.

Saturday night we took up some reading! I think I had blogged previously that I just hadn't been into reading too much lately and I didn't know why. I still don't know why, but I got the Captain Phillips book for Christmas and am loving it. I saw the movie a few months ago and had to read the book since we all know that books are better than movies!! Edwin and I read on the couch for at least 90 minutes on Saturday. It was very relaxing and refreshing.

My new cookbook I got for Christmas!! There are some recipes that look amazingly delicious in it, including...

HUEVOS RANCHEROS! (There are eggs there, they are just covered in other things...)
What is everyone up to for New Year's tomorrow? I hope it is fun, regardless of what you are doing! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! xoxo

PS - if you need some entertainment, read this foodie's blog post about her 2013 cooking fails - it's pretty hilarious!

christmas 2013

This is always a fun time of year. Who doesn't love spending time with family and relaxing by the tree?! We went to church on Christmas eve which was nice.

Below are some photos of a very, very merry Spier Christmas!

I made dinner on Christmas Eve post-church. My mom bought tamales since that is what you typically have for dinner on Christmas Eve in Guatemala; but it turns out these Costco-version tamales were not so amazing...

Christmas morning!

Drinking our coffee with Bailey's - so yummy

I got more lululemon than a girl could ever want!!! These wunder unders in the picture are one of my favorites, because of the super fun print, as well as the vinyasa scarf.

Such a mess!

Breakfast of Christmas morning champions: wife saver, cinnamon buns, hashbrowns, coffee, and mimosas!

After breakfast (well, brunch...) everyone played a few rounds of Scrabble. Except me. I got stuck on potato peeling duty.

I like this Christmas-y photo of us :)

An outtake from the sibling photos!

Santa and Mrs. Clause also brought Edwin a gift when they came to visit!

Wearing the oh-so-cool Christmas cracker hats

Here is Santa and Mrs. Clause :)

Guess what I did on Boxing Day! THIS! In my new lulu pants :)

i'm a lucky girl

I stayed home from work today because I was sick. We are talking a gross, feverish, achy, and very not pleasant stomach flu. The good news here is that it has proven to be only 24 hours. I am on the mend now; thank goodness. My great boyfriend has turned out to be an amazing doctor. I think he also feels a little guilty that this may have come from him - oh well, we both survived! He got me pepto bismol, rubbed my back, put a heater really, really close to me (I was freezing), and made me breakfast this morning when I was finally able to eat. Another thing that makes him the best boyfriend in the world is that he bought me a new phone for Christmas!

I was making dinner on Thursday night and accidentally dropped my phone on the tile floor. The front glass smashed all over the floor and there were a bunch of cracks all over the screen. Needless to say, I was a little grumpy about it. I just felt like my phone has already been fixed by my good friend from craigslist multiple times. Plus, my contract isn't up for another year with Telus so it would be expensive to buy a whole new phone. Poor Edwin...there may have been some tears involved when I smashed my phone. I am fully aware that grumpiness may be a thing I need to work on...

Alas, it turned out he had bought me a new phone for Christmas! It's a beautiful gold iPhone 5. He knows me so well. And is so thoughful. I will stop with the mush now :)

I love the Christmas time of year. We went to my Aunty Coralees house for her annual Christmas dinner last weekend. So much fun and yummy food! Bailey was on his best behaviour.

Also, my daddio went and got our Christmas tree for the house! We are all decorated and good to go.

Edwin and I went to the Stanley Park Christmas Train a few weekends ago. You know, the weekend where it felt like -45 outside temperature-wise?! It was so so so so cold, but really fun! We got hot chocolate and churros, then wandered around to see some lights before hopping on the train.

Did you know one of my best buddies JC was in town for a short visit before her next cruise adventure?! She is such a world traveler and always has good stories for us. She is off again now!

Edwin and I hung out with Jack a few weekends ago - he is the cutest thing ever. He can also take some steps on his own now!!

I am not sure if it is because I am sick, or what my deal is, but I just saw this commercial that made me cry. Serious. And then, while reading one of my fave blogs, I came across this article that ALSO made me cry! I think they were good tears.

Anywho, I am going to continue to lay on the couch and recover. I hope everyone has a fantastic pre-Christmas weekend!!

a thing post

I went to the fabulous wedding yesterday of my friend Sam from high school who married his Colombian sweetheart Margarita - read about his life here (it's quite a fascinating one, I must say!)

...and their beautifully romantic wedding song. (read the translated lyrics here)

A great article on 'boring' men and romance as seen on one of my favorite blogs!

I made cauliflower alfredo sauce a few weeks ago for pasta - it seemed like a great idea for a healthy pasta sauce. It definitely was, but I may have added just a WEE bit too much garlic. Whoops! Now I know for next time...

There is a new lululemon CEO in town!

This is a cool reminder article. It is entitled "17 Productive Ways to Spend 5 Minutes Instead of Checking Your Email Again."

A cookbook I would love! (just looking at the cover makes me hungry...) (as seen here)

A New York artist faked falling asleep on people in the subway - see their reactions

Last but NOT least, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY LIL' SIS!!!! I say this every year I think, but I am seriously so lucky to have such a mature, strong, determined, sweet, and kind-hearted sister like her.  Love you Ferf!

Our little furry part of the family went to doggy heaven last weekend. She had to be put down because of some complications with a surgery she had. It was very, very sad since she was always there to greet you at the door, to give you a kiss (well, lick) when you were sad, and to snuggle with you in bed. She loved car rides, chasing squirrels, walks with mom, and greenies. She is very much much missed by us, but she had a great 10.5 years of life and probably ate WAY too many treats. We like to think she had a pretty good family to live with :)

She was pretty cool when she wore her shades.

She liked to sit on my lap and blog with me.

Em and little sister having a snooze!

She always wanted to take selfies with me! We took a lot.

She loved to play in the yard with random toys.

How she preferred to do car rides...

Even she liked to roll up the rim!!

Lil sis and Emma on a trip to pick up mom from work.

Em and Pants hanging out

Puppy kisses!

Emma with JC in the office at the Y.

Emma in my old car. She missed that car too, I know it.

Her hangout spot - the window seat in the living room.

My dad had to shovel little patches in the yard the year it majorly snowed so she could walk properly outside!

Opening Christmas presents

Our last family photo. I can't imagine how many pictures she had taken of her over the years...!! We even got professional photos taken of her for my mom for her birthday one year. Such a spoiled puppy :)
